Golf - Breaking the 90 stroke barrier

Trying to get you golf game to 90 or below? Almost there but not quite? Here is a little trick that helped me score consistently in the 80's. It has nothing to do with your swing, or putting stroke. It has everything to do with course and stress management. Here is what I did. I played every hole as a par 5. Sounds crazy right? Well, hear me out. If you are a marginal golfer, like me, you can put a lot of pressure on yourself and make some really bad decisions if you are trying to shoot regulation par on every hole. By making every hole a par 5, all you have to do to break 90 is score 5 or less on every hole. This small change takes some pressure off and takes away some of the temptation to try and make an impossible (stupid) shot attempt to make up for the last bad shot. Instead, you think, "Ok, I am behind a tree 200 yards from the flag but I don't have to try and hit the ball around the tree, under the limb and over the pond to get the ball to the green" to score a regulation par. Instead you think, "I can just punch this out to the fairway, hit into the green, two put and score a 5 (par)". If you have been playing awhile and still can't consistently shoot in the 80's, give it a try. It is not a cure for your slice but it can help you make better decisions. Once you master the 80's....on to the 70's. Happy golfing! |
