Utility Trailer For Use by Small Cars

Do you own a small car and need more cargo area for camping, or autocrossing or picking stuff up at the local Home Depot. Don't despair! You can do it. I used to own a 2001 Mazda Miata and had a need for more cargo area. To my surprise I was able to find a trailer hitch specifically made for my Miata and a small utility trailer that was perfect for the purposes mentioned above. I will include links to sellers of both the hitch and the trailer later in the article but a little about each. You can find them at a number of sites with a google search. I bought mine hitch at etrailer.com. Most of them in the small car category will pull up to 1,500 pounds and handle up to 200 pounds of tongue weight. You can install it yourself or if you uncomfortable doing that, you can take it to a professional for installation. That is what I did. It took them less than a half hour to install the hitch and lighting harness. Even if you don't intend to pull a trailer, the hitch is useful because you can also add a bike rack or cargo carrier to the hitch receiver. You just can't load over the rated weight of the hitch. Now for the trailer. I bought mine as a kit at Harbor Freight. At the time, it cost $176. It is now listed on their website for $239. They deliver the trailer in two boxes and it can be put together in a couple of hours. It comes with a VIN and a Title to make it easy to register it at your local DMV. This particular one is rated to carry 850 lbs. So, If you have a sports car that is also your daily driver and you are in need of more cargo capability, try adding a hitch and a cargo carrier and or a trailer. I pulled my little trailer from Houston, TX to Los Angeles, CA last year with my Mazda Miata. Good Luck! |
